Carved Black Forest Chamois Head
A beautifully carved "Black Forest" chamois (goat) head, naturalistically painted and detailed with real horns. Mounted on a caved plaque simulating leaves and branches with a shield centred below.
The popularity of Swiss wood carvings was on the rise in the 1800's, thought to have started in the town of Brienz, by the end of the 19th century it had become a driving force for the whole industry. Black Forest wares had become the symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe, with the finest examples found in the royal collection and Victorian world travelers of the period.
