Figural Brass Tray by Franz Xaver Bergmann, Signed "Nam Greb"

Beautifully cast brass tray by Franz Bergmann, signed "Nam Greb" (Bergman backwards). A pair of monkeys huddle in one corner of the tray over reliefs of wheat sheaves. The piece is especially unusual as most of Bergmann's work was produced in bronze.

Bergmann was not a sculptor, but the owner of a Viennese foundry which produced mostly cold-painted bronze works with an oriental, animal or erotic theme. Bergmann employed many anonymous artists who produced castings signed by the foundry itself. Notable sculptor, Bruno Zach, also commissioned the foundry to produce some of his works.

Circa: 1890
